HOW TO APPLY

Candidates must initially complete the Audition Application form which can be downloaded from the download page. We have tried to make the information on this website as comprehensive as possible. However if you have any specific questions not covered here then please contact the College.

An audition fee of £30 is payable. Students who receive an award will have this deducted from their contribution to their course fees. See 'Fees and Funding' above.

AUDITION CRITERIA

Stella Mann College assesses potential and suitability for the courses we run at audition as well as the following requirements. This enables the college to accept students who may not have received as comprehensive a grounding as others - in the knowledge that the course will provide the training they require to meet the needs of the profession. Therefore the following criteria are a guideline - and the college reserves the right to use discretion when accepting candidates.

PHYSIQUE

Physicality is assessed in line with the career aspiration of the candidate and the relative professional requirement. Proportion - leg and body length will also be assessed as will the alignment of the spine. Height to weight/build ratio will also be considered.

MOBILITY & FLEXIBILITY (in all joints and the feet)

Mobility is assessed by a sports therapist. Any candidate considered to have too limited a range of movement may not be accepted. However, consideration will be given to the scope of possible improvement.

VOCAL ABILITY

Most students choose to sing at audition. Pitch, range, clarity, technique and interpretation are requirements that will be assessed.

ACTING ABILITY

Some students who are interested in the dance course choose to perform a monologue at audition. Diction, projection, characterisation, and presence will all be taken into consideration.

CO-ORDINATION

During the dance classes at the audition and during the prepared solo, the panel will be looking for the necessary co-ordination for a career in dance. As under-training is often a cause of poor co-ordination, experience and potential will be taken into consideration.

MUSICALITY

An ability to keep time, and to interpret the music artistically is required and this is assessed as above.

SENSE OF PERFORMANCE AND ARTISTRY

Good eyeline, confident performance, and artistic interpretation of different dance styles and/or vocal performance are assessed throughout the audition. The college is always interested in 'performers' who show flair and individuality and this is as much of a consideration as facility and physique.

DISABILITY

Stella Mann College will endeavour to accommodate any student, provided that our training can be of benefit to the individual concerned.

AUDITION PROCEDURES

ADMISSION

Admission is by audition only. In the case of overseas applicants, a video audition (see details below) accompanied by a letter of recommendation from your dance teacher is acceptable. If a successful EU candidate wishes to register in order to be considered for a Dance and Drama Award funded place then they will need to attend the funding audition in the summer term at the College in order to be assessed by our specialist panel and to ensure equality of opportunity.

The audition lasts from approximately 10.00am until 4.00pm and the arrangements are usually as follows:

1 hour Ballet class 1 hour Jazz class Physical Examination

Musical Theatre Diploma Candidates

Candidate's choice of song - this should be from current Musical Theatre or Pop repertoire; Candidate's choice of monologue, either from a musical or a play, no more than five minutes in length and preferably from 20th or 21st century repertoire. You should bring the sheet music with you: if this is impossible then you may bring a backing tape or preferably a cd, provided that it just has the accompaniment on it and no voice.

Dance Diploma Candidates

If you wish to be considered for the Dance Diploma, we ask that you prepare a dance solo in your chosen genre, which is no longer than 1 ½ minutes. You will need to provide a cd of the music. We also ask that you choose either a song or a monologue as described above. You will also be asked to fill out a short questionnaire, which will give us some indication of your goals and aspirations.

Every candidate will also have a short interview.

Successful audition candidates are sent an acceptance letter together with a registration form. In order to enrol the completed registration form must be returned together with a letter from their GP to confirm fitness for purpose.

In the summer term, accepted candidates who have registered are invited to spend a day with the college. This is the funding audition day and the faculty panel will assess all candidates in order to allocate the funding.

FUNDING

Stella Mann College is currently able to offer a number of funded places via the Dance and Drama Award Scheme. All EU and UK passport holders are eligible for Dance and Drama Award funding and all successful auditionees may audition for the funding after registering with the College. If an award is offered, maintenance may also be applied for - but this is means-tested. It is compulsory that any student awarded a Dance and Drama Award at this College studies the National Diploma in Professional Dance or Musical Theatre, validated by Trinity College, London.

LOCAL AUTHORITY FUNDING

There are currently some discretionary awards available from the Channel Islands and Scotland. You would need to live in those areas and apply to the relevant Local Education Authority.

CHARITABLE TRUSTS

Some students have been assisted financially by various trusts and information can be found at your local library. More details are available from the College.

MALE SCHOLARSHIPS

In order to encourage the training of males, the College currently has on offer a limited number of scholarships for the three-year course. The scholarships are for the training - and do not cover accommodation, uniform, examinations and travel. Any registered males are considered for a scholarship, and may also apply for Dance and Drama Award funding. If a male is successful in gaining an Award, the scholarship route is not applicable to him.
